All We Know About Body Makeup Contouring

Use with caution!

Body makeup contouring was a well-kept secret of makeup artists, editors and celebrities. It’s used to make someone look slimmer or give the appearance of a more toned portion of the body for magazine covers, TV commercials and the like. But with beauty bloggers and makeup artists themselves sharing tricks of the trade on social media, we can now do it ourselves…just for days when we need that extra boost of confidence.

What is body makeup contouring?

As the name suggests, you use makeup to enhance, not fake, parts of your beautiful body. Because why not? It’s amazing what a bit of shadow, shimmer and body oil can do to make you look extra good.

When to use it?

Use with caution and use sparingly. Besides, the goal is to enhance your natural gifts; not pretend you have what doesn’t exist.

The basics

Neck—Your neck (and hands) will give away your age even if your face won’t. So to give it a slim and taut appearance, InStyle.com suggests “applying a bronzing powder evenly to the entire neck, blending up to but not past the jaw line.” This also helps contour your jaw bone and minimize the appearance of double chins.

Breasts—We all want our breasts to look firm and separated, and thankfully, the makeup hack to give them a perky look is the same for everyone. According to InStyle, “The key is highlighting the tops of the breasts and collarbone…then shade in two parenthesis shapes between breasts and on the outsides with bronzer…” Finish by shading above and below the collarbone using horizontal lines.

But if you have little to work with and need more *ahem* cleavage, watch this tutorial by Cosmopolitan:

• Abs—Because it’s crop top season! “Add a straight line from the center of the cleavage to the belly button and then a parenthesis on either side of the belly button from the rib cage to the hip bones,” advises InStyle. It’ll give you a natural-looking hourglass shape with just the right amount of shadow.

Less is always more

For those who just want a bit of highlighting, there’s always body oil or body shimmer. Slather on décolleté, shoulders, arms, chest area, abs, back and legs for a natural sculpted and glowing look.
