Globe Live and 9Works Theatrical’s Newsies Brings Home The Big Guns
Not that anyone’s counting
The Gawad Buhay Awards, organized by Philstage, is an annual awards ceremony that honors outstanding productions. It’s been hailed as the country’s own version of the Tony Awards and every year has only been more competitive than the last—and 2018 was no difference. And the big winner? Globe Live and 9Works Theatrical’s Newsies.
For the first time ever, Newsies was brought to the Philippine stage last year. It was a risk of great proportions, but it was a risk that proved itself well-worth the plunge.
Outstanding Choreography for a Play or Musical
Male Lead Performance in a Musical
Outstanding Stage Direction for a Musical
Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical
Outstanding Production of Existing Material for a Musical
In many ways, the story of Newsies is symbolic for its own journey on the Philippine stage. The stage play told the story of paper boys that rallied together to fights against big-name publishers Hearst and Pulitzer, who raised distribution prices at the boys’ expense. What followed was a story of struggle, of rising to the occasion and dreaming beyond what life hands to you. Likewise, production of the local iteration was just that: A classic story of David and Goliath, with the former winning out in the end.
The casting was impeccable, the music was inspired and the choreography was insane. Newsies proved that you don’t necessarily need big names to make an impact—what you do need is creativity, some raw talent and a lot of dedication.
