On Being the First Filipino Astronaut: Chino Roque
Chino Roque is set to become the first-ever Filipino to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly to outer space. Check out five things about Chino, from his childhood dream to his ongoing space journey:
1. Being an Astronaut was My Childhood Dream.
"I never took my eyes off that dream, and when I was given the chance, I wanted to see if I was qualified. This (competition) rekindled my childhood dream and at that point, I knew that given the chance, I would work for it."
2. My Primary Source of Exercise is Crossfit.
"I'm a CrossFit coach and an athlete who takes pleasure competing locally and internationally. I manage to find time for football (soccer), which has been my first love since grade school. When I'm gearing towards a competition, I find myself doing Bikram yoga to focus on meditation and flexibility, which best complements my lifestyle."
3. Learning is an Ongoing Process.
"I'm presently studying Aviation in Clark, Pampanga. This has opened my eyes to different new lessons, especially related to being a space man. I also make time for family, friends, and God. These, I believe, have kept me focused towards my goals and motivated me to push further."
4. I'm Excited for the Adventure of a Lifetime.
"I look forward to sharing this experience with everyone, especially the aspiring Filipino youth who take interest in space travel. I'm very honored to have received this blessing, and I'll do whatever I can to give back."
5. Communications is very Vital to Me.
"With a lifestyle that's always on the go—whether traveling by land, sea, air, and very soon, space—being able to share videos and pictures with my family and friends makes the distance more bearable. With Globe's Chat Pack, I can stay connected with them through Facebook Messenger, Kakao Talk, Line, WeChat, WhatsApp, and Viber. Social media is also a great platform to express my interests and hobbies with those who follow my lifestyle!"
