Star Wars Episode Summary in 5 Mins

Is it even possible to summarize one of the most successful film franchises in history? Maybe not, but we’ll take a crack at it for you’re convenience.

If you're a film geek, a sci-fi nerd, or a pop culture vulture, then the news of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force AwakensTM was like Christmas coming early this year. But if you're just a casual, curious human being, there's surely something in that tantalizingly exciting trailer (or in the way your friends can't stop talking about it) that has gotten your interest piqued. It's been decades since George Lucas' Star Wars saga came into our consciousness, but there's something about that galaxy far, far away that has kept us hooked all these years. Think you know the story (or maybe not at all)? Read on for a little refresher!

Set 32 years before the events of Episode 4 (the first Star Wars film released in 1977), a young Jedi named Obi-Wan Kenobi is an apprentice to Master Qui-Gon Jinn. They are tasked to assist and protect Queen Padmé Amidala of the Naboo from the oppression of the Trade Federation. Unexpectedly (or by the power of The Force), they meet Anakin Skywalker, a Force-sensitive young boy on the desert planet of Tatooine. Little do they know that they'll all meet an archenemy the Jedi hasn't seen for many generations. This is the dawn of a galactic struggle between the dark and light sides of the Force.

Witness the duel of the fates between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and the Sith warrior Darth Maul with his iconic double-bladed light saber that has never been seen before. Also, welcome the first appearance of two iconic characters: C-3PO and R2-D2.

Anakin is now a Padawan learner to Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. He then faces a classic dilemma of duty versus love, when he starts falling for the now Galactic Republic Senator, Padmé Amidala—an act forbidden in the Jedi code. The action heats up as Obi-Wan discovers that a clone army is being created, mysteriously upon the request of the Jedi and the Republic. Obi Wan, Anakin, and Padmé seek to unravel the sinister plot that will eventually plunge the Jedi and the Republic into all-out war with the Separatists. As the Clone Wars erupt in the galaxy, a love story will decide the fate of the Jedi.

Blue, green, and red light sabers cross each other in another epic battle between Anakin, Obi-Wan, and the Separatist leader, Count Dooku. To the surprise of Star Wars fans, a seemingly frail Yoda participates in the battle and shows us that he is not only wise with Force, but also formidable with the light saber (the small, green one that is iconic to this day).

In between Episode II and Episode III are two animated series. Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003) and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008). Combined, they feature a staggering 146 episodes of the three-year galactic war between the Republic and the Separatists. Most importantly, our hero Anakin continues to grow from a Padawan learner into a great Jedi General—with hints of dark things to come for him and the Republic.

If you thought this would be the end of the conflict, you're wrong. The Jedi is about to discover the cause and the ultimate purpose of the Clone Wars. To make things worse, Anakin's fear of losing Amidala lures him even closer to the Dark side. Anakin, Padmé, Obi-Wan, and Yoda shall decide on the fate of the Republic at the climactic battle between good and evil. Remember this line for it will forever remind you of the great Jedi tragedy—"Execute Order 66."

Above the surface of Coruscant, a great space battle erupts between the clone armies of the Jedi Generals and the droid armies of the infamous General Grievous. Watch the Dark Lord of the Sith take advantage of Anakin's weakness as he falls closer to the dark side. With Obi-Wan battling Anakin and Yoda taking on Darth Sidious, witness the battle of the light and dark sides. As the First Galactic Empire and Darth Vader arise, a new hope comes in the galaxy with the birth of Luke and Leia.

Between Episode III and Episode IV is another animation called Star Wars Rebels. An ongoing series, it focuses on the origins of the conflict between the Rebel Alliance and the new Galactic Empire, which eventually leads to the beginning of Episode IV.

Released in 1977, this was the first film of the Star Wars saga. With the dark ending of Episode III, this new storyline ushers in a new hope for the Republic. An adult Luke Skywalker meets a now older Obi-Wan Kenobi. They receive a mysterious message from Princess Leia, who's asking Obi-Wan for his help. With two smugglers—Han Solo and Chewbacca—and our friendly droids—C-3PO and R2-D2—they set out on a quest to rescue the beleaguered princess and defeat the evil Empire. Luke and Leia don't know it yet, but they're right in the middle of making Star Wars history.

Princess Leia implants vital information into R2-D2 with the iconic words, "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope." The terror of the Death Star is revealed as it destroys the planet Alderaan with its powerful super laser.

After the rebels succeed in destroying the Death Star, Darth Vader intensifies his vengeance against the rebels and his search for Luke Skywalker. With the power of the Force, Obi-Wan brings Luke to the greatest living Jedi in the galaxy, Master Yoda. He reveals to Luke a weakness that could lure the young Jedi into the dark side. As Luke and Vader face as enemies, the Sith Lord chooses this moment to reveal a sinister secret (and creates a cinematic moment that history will never forget). Remember these words, as they'll send chills down your spine— "Luke, I am your father."

AT-AT Walkers and hordes of Stormtroopers attack the rebels on the ice planet of Hoth. Leia and Han escape the invasion but are stalked by bounty hunter Boba Fett. Vader turns Han into carbonite and after which, the famous captain of the Millennium Falcon is taken by Fett to the notorious gang lord, Jabba the Hutt. Luke is seriously injured by Vader and he is left hanging on for dear life. When it all seemed that the Rebels have been defeated, Leia rescues him and leads the Alliance to fight another day.

The final showdown between father and son shall be revealed in the sixth episode of the Star Wars saga. Han Solo is rescued by Luke and Leia in a daring operation. Once the trio of Rebel generals is complete, they lead the Rebel Alliance to a final battle with the Galactic Empire. In the moon of Endor, a small guerrilla team (including a tribe of Ewoks) attacks the shield generator protecting the second Death Star. But Endor is a trap! In true family-drama fashion, only love can conquer all (or in this case, bring balance to the Force) as Vader/Anakin and his son Luke's unbreakable bond of blood champions over good and evil.

As a Jedi Master, Luke Skywalker now wields a green light saber. Luke battles Vader and the Emperor lures him to become his new dark apprentice. Witness the prophecy fulfilled as dark turns to light with the chosen one bringing balance to the Force!
