Makati Speakeasies You Might Not Know About

While Prohibition’s not your typical hush-hush speakeasy, an evening here lets you experience the glamor, luxury and lavishness that defined the 1920s. It positions itself as an underground party place, evoking the exuberant vibe of Prohibition Era dance halls with its high ceiling den, large arcs, colorful lights and high-powered DJ entertainment. It’s an expansive space that can accommodate 120 pax, so feel free to come in a large group, and dance and drink the night away.

Contrary to the nature of its name, Prohibition proudly displays and serves a plethora of liquor, spirit and whisky brands. It houses 20 of the world’s best single malt whiskies, rare liquors and spirits, while its designer cocktails are made with premium spirits and freshly pressed juice concocted by a New York-based mixologist. To find this place, look for the exit door behind Dillinger 1903.

You wouldn’t expect to discover a secret hideaway behind the smoking area of Bugsy’s Salcedo, especially with the jaunty party vibe of the bar’s frequent DJ nights. But Red Rabbit is a welcome surprise for anyone looking for a much-needed respite where they can savor their drink without the distractions.

The black and white interiors of wood, leather and granite lends this chic speakeasy a 1920s ambiance with a European touch—and it’s easy to imagine the bar entertaining men in pinstripe suits and fedoras while women in flapper dresses smoking their cigarettes through thin cigarette holders. The decor spells class and discernment, qualities that extend to the impressive drinks menu. Red Rabbit specializes in craft cocktails, wines, single malt whisky, and spirits including rum, tequila and mezcal. Try the Gin Garden (Hendricks, apple juice, lemon juice, mint and cucumber) or the French Martini (Belvedere, Chambord, pineapple juice). But be warned, the cocktails are so good it will be hard to pass up another round.

What used to be Mexicali’s commissary is now a “cave” for candid drinking sessions tucked behind El Chupacabra. La Cueva del Chupacabra, which literally translates to “the cave of the chupacabra,” provides a relaxing spot where you can comfortably continue the night with drinks after a dinner of Mexican grub, like soft tacos and hearty burritos. Resembling a Mexican home, La Cueva’s rustic interiors with brick walls, open pipe ceiling, colorful touches and guitars hung on the wall will give you a taste of authenticity—especially when you order a glass of La Chupadita, their sweet, rum-based signature drink.

La Chupadita

Narnia instantly comes to mind as you walk through a secret closet (filled with hanging coats!) within pub and restaurant Belle & Dragon to gain access to Mandalay. And once inside, you can’t help but feel like you’ve been transported to different realm from another period. In the dimly lit interiors of Mandalay, you’ll find touches of the Old World: a pair of commanding Chinese dragons on pedestals, Buddha heads, antique globe, rattan chandeliers and high back dark leather tufted benches. It’s glamorous, opulent and purely exotic.

Mandalay boasts an extensive and premium selection of whiskies and cigars. With whisky, go for neat; no ice or water, just pure flavor (as advised by Whisky Bible author Jim Murray!). And we recommend the Cragabus Islay blended malt Scotch whisky for your first taste. It has a peaty, smoky flavor with salty hints and slight sweetness. With a dram of Cragabus Islay in one hand, and a cigar in the other, your stay in Mandalay will redefine your notion of class and decadence.
