There’s no doubt that work, in all its forms, can get stressful. It doesn’t matter how much you love your job, sometimes deadlines just get the most of you. But a stressed you is often times a flustered you and a flustered you is not productive. But there are ways to cut the cycle early and they won’t take much of your time either.
You might have a plan for the day ahead, but you can never help the possibility of interruptions. You cannot control when a client makes a last minute request or a supplier asks for an extension on their deadline. What you can control, however, is how you react to them. If they’re not a priority, don’t allow the situation to control the rest of your day. Otherwise, try to be proactive instead of reactive.
Take time to breathe.
If you’re having a particularly difficult moment, take the time out to breathe. Whether it’s after a long and trying meeting or an impending deadline, spare yourself a minute or two to just calm yourself down. Let go of your keyboard, stop glancing at your phone and just inhale and exhale even breaths through your nose. This will help get your head on straight as well.
Be generous with your deadlines.
Don’t cut yourself short. There will be times when you have to deliver an output in a short amount of time, but if you’re asked for an estimate as to when it can be delivered, give yourself an extra hour or two. Manage their expectations as well as yours. We promise, it will make a difference.
If you aren’t sure about something, ask for specifics. If your client is vague, request more details about what they want. There’s no harm in inquiring about something, especially when a lot hangs in the balance. And if you work without not knowing what people expect, you run the risk of having to start from scratch.
Eat well and sleep properly.
Eating unhealthy food will not only tire you out faster, but it will also stress your system. Meanwhile, sleep has its rejuvenating effects that will be cut short if you don’t get the right amount of sleep. Do yourself a favor and re-energize yourself the natural way. It’ll help you feel more fresh and replenished.
