The Best Dressed List: 15 Different LBDs You Can Rock This Party Season

No wardrobe is complete without a little black dress!

“One is never overdressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress.”—Karl Lagerfeld

Lagerfeld, Chanel’s current creative director, couldn’t have said it better. Coco Chanel herself, the founder of the fashion house and pioneer of the LBD, would understandably agree if she could.

The Little Black Dress doesn’t draw too much attention to itself and that way, it’s versatile. But this wasn’t always the case. In the early ‘20s, black clothing was strictly reserved for times of mourning. Worn at any other point in time and this was considered a distasteful display. Like the game changer she was though, Coco Chanel went right ahead and broke the rules anyway: She got her design for a short black dress published in Vogue magazine. It was hailed the dress “Chanel's Ford” by the fashion publication because like Ford’s Model T vehicle, Chanel’s dress was made accessible to women of all social classes. The Little Black Dress was “a sort of uniform for all women of taste,” according to Vogue and the rest is history.

Princess Diana in Christina Stambolian (the original freakum dress, in our honest opinion), Audrey Hepburn in that iconic Hubert de Givenchy ensemble or this teeny-tiny version by Jacquemus on Selena Gomez: all proof that you can never go wrong with a Little Black Dress. And you can put that to the test yourself this holiday season!

Get ready for your whirlwind back-to-back Christmas parties, nights out, family reunions or fancy dinners and opt for a chic LBD instead of the obvious festive frock. We’re pretty certain, too, you’ll get more out of the former.
