Woman of the Week: Zendaya

We’re showing the Spider-Man: Homecoming star some love as she turns 21

Zendaya (born Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman) is not your average, cookie-cutter Disney star. Apart from managing to sidestep the scandals that often come with teen stars transitioning into adulthood, she’s paved the way for a new crop of child actors: the young activists. Following suit are stars like Rowan Blanchard of Girl Meets World and Yara Shahidi of Black-ish who, like Zendaya, go beyond what is expected of a young actor in Hollywood.

Zendaya’s résumé boasts movie projects (she’ll be back as Michelle “MJ” Jones in the sequel of Spider-Man: Homecoming,) extended stints with the Disney Channel, fashion campaigns (Dolce & Gabban anyone?) and beauty endorsements. Here, you’ll also find her partnerships with UNAID, Convoy of Hope and feedOne among other humanitarian organizations. It's a résumé dated 2016 by the way…which means she's accomplished all these before hitting the big 2-1.

As Zendaya Coleman celebrates her 21st birthday on September 1, we count the many reason why people love—and look up to—the actress/dancer/singer/activist:

#1: She spent her last birthday raising money for the Women’s Empowerment Initiative

This campaign helped impoverished women in El Salvador, Kenya, the Philippines and Nicaragua.

#2: As a trained performer, she’s got serious moves

#3: She’s also got mad pipes

#4: She’s a beauty chameleon

#5: She’s a natural at carrying tricky looks not a lot of fashion girls can pull off

Barbie even came out with a doll to commemorate her look at the 87th Annual Academy Awards

#6: Even when she’s dressed down, she’s flawless

#7: She’s vocal about pressing social issues

#8: She’s not afraid to clap back at bullies online

#9: She’s also not afraid to call out magazines for the near impossible beauty standards that they perpetuate

#10: She’s down-to-earth and wise beyond her years

Happy birthday, Zendaya! Keep inspiring!
