Woman Crush Wednesday: Why We Admire Angelina Jolie
There’s more to the mother-of-six than just pouty lips and an acting resume to die for
Angelina Jolie has been a force to reckon with in all the years that she’s been in the industry. She’s grown up to become a graceful woman, killed it on the big screen, proven motherhood comes in different forms and constantly stands up for what she believes is right. Of course we were bound to feature her on Woman Crush Wednesdays.
1. She’s turned her life around more than once
There were reports claiming that Angelina has battled against anorexia and that she used to self-harm. Older fans will remember that she used to wear a vial of then-husband Bill Bob Thorton’s blood around her neck. She even kissed her brother on the Oscars red carpet.
And yet a younger crowd will recognize Angelina for her humanitarian work, for her films and for her devotion as a mother. The 41-year-old has gone on the record and said that she was not being rebellious; she was just looking for her voice and who can blame her for making some noise along the way? Sometimes a wrong turn is necessary to get to your destination.
2. She’s unconventional
When Angelina first decided to be a mother, she was unwed. But it was something she knew she was destined to be and so she started to look into her options. The eventual adoption of Maddox, Pax and Zahara—each from different countries and ethnicities—made the entire process more acceptable on a world-wide scale.
Despite public opinion, Angelina also decided to get a double mastectomy to decrease the risk of breast cancer. Two years after that, she had her ovaries removed because of another health concern. Take note: You need to take care of yourself and public opinion should never get in the way of that!
3. She’s not afraid to choose love
The love triangle between Angelina, Brad and Jennifer Aniston has become a classic Hollywood story. Despite the issues and questionable motives—save the debate about whether or not it’s acceptable to date someone taken for another time—Angelina chose to stay with Brad and start a life with him. It was a tough decision but we still give her credit for choosing love in the midst of the controversy of being the other woman.
4. She has noble causes
Call her an actress and a mother, but you cannot leave out that Angelina is a humanitarian at heart. Following the filming for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in Cambodia, Angelina set of on a mission to visit war-torn locations and donate to projects of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She was eventually named a Special Envoy for her work.
Angelina also put up the Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation in Cambodia, which is considered as Asia’s first Millennium Village. The area also covers 60,000 hectares of land that was converted into a wildlife reserve. Talk about a woman that puts her money where her mouth is.
5. She’s as courageous as she is beautiful
It comes as no surprise that the current #TravelBan in the United States is a sensitive topic for the mother-of-six. She voiced out her opinions in an OpEd piece that was published in The New York Times. She called on the need to base refugee policies on facts, not fear.
Keep it up, Angelina! You make us proud to be women.
