A Look Back On the Philippines’ Miss Universe Queens
Slay queens, slay
With the Miss Universe pageant happening on local shores this year (the first time was in 1974) all eyes are on PH bet Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2016 Maxine Medina. Maxine, a model-interior designer turned beauty queen, has been hard at work since winning Binibini to “become a better version of herself,” shared one of her mentors Mark Arthur Payumo Abalos online. We’ve also seen videos of her killer walk on social media uploaded by the country’s beauty queen maker, Jonas Gaffud. With such grace, natural beauty and genuine desire to help the youth, we don’t doubt Medina has a fighting chance at the much-anticipated Miss Universe competition. Meanwhile, let’s look back on the Philippines’ winning queens and their best moments.
Miss Universe 1969
The Philippines won its first crown in July 1969 as Gloria Diaz beat 60 other contestants from around the world and was named Miss Universe.
Beauty aside, sharp wit always wins the panel as well as the audience as attested by our first-ever Miss Universe.
Question: In the next day or so, a man will land on the moon. If a
man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to
Gloria Diaz: “Oh, just the same things I do. I think if he has been on the moon for so long, I think when he comes over he wants to change, I guess.”
Miss Universe 1973
Four years later, another Filipina was crowned the most beautiful woman in the universe, Margie Moran-Floirendo.
Grace, poise and knowing your best angle can sweep special awards in the competition just as how Margie Moran won Miss Photogenic in the 1973 Miss Universe pageant before taking home the crown.
Miss Universe 2015
It may have been one of the most controversial pageants in history but it was one of our favorite beautiful and emotional moment in time as Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach won the third Miss Universe title for the Philippines. 40 years was definitely worth the wait.
“Confidently beautiful with a heart,” will forever be etched in the hearts of many. Pia Wurtzbach is a part of a new breed of beauty queens—candid, honest with a quiet elegance about her—that has won the universe over.
The 2016 Miss Universe will be held on January 30, 2017 a the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
