#WomanCrushWednesday: Why We Love Beth Ditto
The name should already be familiar.
She was born Mary Beth Patterson, but we know and love her as Beth Ditto, the frontwoman of indie rock band Gossip. As talented as she is—her voice has been compared to Etta James, Janis Joplin and even Tina Turner—she stands for so much more. She’s a voice to so many and we couldn’t love her more for it.
Fronting a band is no joke, but Ditto held her own for Gossip from the time of its formation in 1999 to its dissolution last year. Above and beyond this, she worked on several collaborations with some of the most respected names in music.
She sang on Blondie’s A Rose By Any Name in 2013, as well as Simian Mobile Disco’s Cruel Intentions. Ditto even released her own EP, which was produced by James Ford and Jas Shaw.
Her music is soulful and melancholic, but usually with a cheerful dance beat. She’s gone on the record to say that she’s inspired almost exclusively by 80s disco jams and up-tempo R&B—just think Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
Ditto is openly lesbian and she’s unafraid to stand for LGBTQ rights. She’s a firm believer of body-positivity and is an advocate of several other feminist issues. Without apology or remorse, Ditto is who she is and proudly posed nude on the cover of NME in 2007. Just as she wants it, you can take her as she is or leave it.
“I have no control over what people think of me,” she’s been quoted saying. “But I have 100 percent control of what I think about myself and that is so important.”
Looking at her now, you wouldn’t think Ditto grew up in a poor family from Arkansas. She lived with her mother, various stepfathers and six other siblings, of which she was right smack in the middle. At the age of 13, she moved out of her mother’s house and went to live with her aunt.
She’s living and breathing proof that if you want something badly enough, you can get it with hard work, sweat and dedication. She’s the epitome of standing up for yourself and those around you. She’s true, laidback and is just completely #goals.
