3 Places You Need to Add to Your Travel Bucket List
Our favorite Netflix shows led us right to these amazing places—and we can’t wait to see them in real-life!
Litchfield, New York
Inspired by: Orange is the New Black
Orange is the New Black’s Litchfield Penitentiary may be fictional, but the small town of Litchfield in Herkimer County, New York is very much real. From watching the series, we know that Litchfield is a quaint and quiet place with beautiful colonial style structures, sprawling green fields and lush forests. It’s the place to go to if you want some down time away from urban life, hit pause and just admire the view, and experience both history and nature.
Go here: White Flower Farm is paradise! It’s a place where you can literally stop and smell rare and exotic flowers. Another option is Topsmead, a nice walking trail that offers a similarly impressive vista but off the beaten path.
Trivia: OITB’s minimum-security prison for women is actually shot in Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center in Rockland County, New York.
Inspired by: Narcos
Medellin, the second largest city in Columbia, has bit of a dark past. Home to the now defunct Medellin Cartel (a drug cartel led by Pablo Escobar played by Wagner Moura in the series), the city used to be the most violent city in the world. But times have changed and these days, Medellin is known as one of Colombia’s liveliest and most creative cities, flocked by tourists for its festivals, flora and fauna, and nightlife. So if you’re looking for a colorful South American city adventure, this is the place to go.
See this: Apart from history museums you need to visit, like the Museo de la Ciudad, and art scenes you have to see, such as the Parque de las Esculturas, Medellin’s Christmas Light Tour, which happens every December and January, is a must—even National Geographic says so. It’s literally a radiant wonderland that will send the holiday-obsessed heart’s aflutter.
Inspired by: Sense8
Remember that scene where Riley, Sense8’s resident cool-girl DJ, was rescued from that icy mountaintop? Despite the heartbreaking event that happened there, we couldn’t help but notice Reykjavik’s breathtaking and otherworldly landscapes. Said to be the world’s northern most capital, the city is famous for its rugged adventures, the otherworldly beauty of its surroundings, and a thriving music, art and food scene.
Check it out: There are very few places in the world where you can see and experience one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena: the northern lights or aurora borealis. And Reykjavik is one of them. The city also features extraterrestrial-looking landscapes, so off-road tours are a must! After a day of thrills, wind down and relax at one of their geothermal springs or indoor spas.
Pro Tip: Re-live every minute of your adventure with an action camera that's built for the great outdoors and is WiFi ready so you can shoot remotely from your smartphone!
