Style File: What's Your Personal Aesthetic?
Take the quiz to find out what your fashion picks say about your personality
Personal style is a term drummed up every so often by lifestyle websites and fashion magazines alike, but for something fairly familiar, it’s a tricky thing to try and explain.
For Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine, the concept of personal style has evolved immensely over the past couple of years yet the key element involved is—ironically enough—unchanging. She’s referring to a sense of self-awareness: “There is an ingredient that I believe is often overlooked and seems to be at the crux of defining your style, and that is honesty,” explains Medine. “You can’t know your style until you know yourself. It sounds platitudinous, yes, but clichés proliferate and become clichés because they’re true. How, after all can you dress to reflect yourself if you’re not quite sure who you are yet? It can sometimes feel like a chicken or egg thing: does the style inform the person or the person inform the style?”
Long-time fashion “it”-girl-turned-“it”-woman Sarah Jessica Parker somewhat echoes this sentiment. “I think, first of all, your point of view changes. And, probably, if you look back at choices you made five years ago, you wouldn’t necessarily regret anything—you might go, ‘I don’t know if I would wear that dress today,’ but you were probably really happy wearing it at the time,” she says. “I tend to wear things and buy things that are for life now. I’m less inclined to be hypnotized by a trend or a ‘moment,’ but I think that’s a really important part in young women’s lives: to experience and dabble and sort of flirt with all those things because it sorts out who you are.”
Personal style, then, is something that’s difficult to define in one go and in one statement, but it is something that can be determined just by looking at your day-to-day, for example: when you get up and get ready for work, when you choose function over fashion, when you choose that LBD over the navy blue cocktail dress hanging side by side in your wardrobe. The ticket really is to pay attention to little decisions and subtle choices. As creatures of habit, this one should be fairly easy to do—fun, too.
