10 Things You Might Not Know About Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

In case you want to brush up on the facts in time for the animated classic’s live-action adaptation on the big screen

The Little Mermaid’s Ariel was supposed to voice Belle

Disney’s initial pick to voice Belle was Jodi Benson, who lent her voice to mermaid princess Ariel. But Paige O’Hara eventually got the part.

The Beast has a name

And it’s not Prince Charming—it’s Adam. But you wouldn’t have known that because it was never mentioned in the original animated movie. His name only came up in the CD-Rom game and in the Broadway musical (and hopefully the live action movie, too).

The animated film was a box office hit!

1991’s Beauty and the Beast was the first animated movie to earn over $100M at the box office and was the third-highest grossing movie of the year. The top two spots went to Terminator: Judgment Day and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

The Beast was inspired by several different animals

Adam a.k.a Beast had the mane of a lion, the head of a buffalo, brow of a gorilla, legs of a wolf and the body of a bear. Whoa.

Beauty and the Beast is based on a live-action 1946 film by Jean Cocteau

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast borrowed inspiration from the classic French film, which follows a similar plot. The main difference? Gaston’s character in the film was named Avenant.

Jackie Chan—yes, you read that right—voiced the Beast

In the Chinese version of the film and he had to sing, too. He also voiced Mulan’s Shang and recorded I’ll Make A Man Out of You. Seriously, what can Jackie Chan not do?

Belle was inspired by Katharine Hepburn

And her portrayal of Jo March in the 1933 film adaptation of the literary classic Little Women. Disney wanted their female lead to be strong and independent, which we think came across just fine.

Belle, Ariel and Slappy Squirrel (Animaniacs) have one thing in common

Their animation reference model Sherri Stoner.

There are only three Disney princesses that are not of royal descent

The first was Cinderella, second Belle and the third was Tiana.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was the first hand-drawn animated movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards

Sadly, it lost to *drum roll* Silence of the Lambs.

Disney's live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast hits theaters March 2017.
